Nuclear membranes and plasma membranes from hen erythrocytes. 3. Localization of activities incorporating fatty acids into phospholipids.
Nuclear membranes and plasma membranes isolated from mature hen erythrocytes differ widely in their phospholipid, cholesterol, and cholesterol ester composition. The plasma membranes contain relatively high amounts of sphingomyelin and cholesterol, as is known for plasma membranes from other cell types. The molar ratios of cholesterol to phospholipid are 1.04 for plasma membranes and 0.42 for n...
متن کاملIsolation of plasma and nuclear membranes of thymocytes. II. Biochemical composition
Thymocyte plasma and nuclear membranes obtained by the procedure described in the accompanying paper were analyzed for their biochemical composition. Plasma membranes were very rich in phospholipid, cholesterol, sialic aicd; they did not contain nucleic acids. In comparison, nuclear membranes had a lower phospholipid to protein ratio and contained much less sialic acid and cholesterol. 50% of t...
متن کاملRole of the nuclear envelope in synthesis, processing, and transport of membrane glycoproteins.
The outer nuclear membrane is morphologically similar to rough endoplasmic reticulum. The presence of ribosomes bound to its cytoplasmic surface suggests that it could be a site of synthesis of membrane glycoproteins. We have examined the biogenesis of the vesicular stomatitis virus G protein in the nuclear envelope as a model for the biogenesis of membrane glycoproteins. G protein was present ...
متن کاملProperties of protein kinase C associated with nuclear membranes.
To study signal transduction directed towards the cell nucleus and at the nuclear membranes, we investigated the association of protein kinase C (PKC) with nuclear membranes obtained from nuclei isolated from bovine brain. By use of phorbol-ester-binding assays, significant amounts of PKC could be demonstrated in nuclei and nuclear membranes. Nuclear membranes are shown to be able to activate p...
متن کاملThe Triton X-100 and high salt resistant residue of Saccharomyces cerevisiae nuclear membranes.
Saccharomyces cerevisiae nuclear membranes were prepared from isolated nuclei by digesting chromatin with deoxyribonuclease after an initial treatment of nuclei with very diluted buffers. When the nuclear membranes were treated with 5% Triton X-100 and 1M NaCl an insoluble fibrous net was obtained which consisted mainly of protein with Mr values of 85 000, 48 000, 45 000, 39 000 and 31 000. Lam...
متن کاملOn the Attachment of the Nuclear Pore Complex
Electron microscope examination of isolated rat liver nuclei after treatment with the detergent Triton X-100 revealed the complete removal of both the inner and outer membranes of the nuclear envelope. The envelope-denuded nuclei did not show any change in either shape or internal ultrastructure. Most strikingly, the nuclear pore complexes, which in untreated nuclei appear to be integral compon...
